A violent Coos County male was sentenced to 50-years in prison by a U.S. District Court judge in Eugene Wednesday. Fifty-year old Thomas W. Cornelius Jr. will spend the rest of his life behind bars. According to officials, Cornelius burglarized 25 homes between 2010 and 2011 and was finally caught by a state trooper who pulled over his rental car and found two stolen guns in the trunk. While awaiting trial in prison, Cornelius assaulted another prison inmate with a shank. In August of 2013, he slit the throat of another inmate. Both victims survived. Between 1985 and 1997, Cornelius was convicted of Burglary, Auto Theft, Escape, Assault, Armed Robbery and other felonies. He also shot a Portland jeweler during a robbery in 1997.
