The Yacht “America” will visit Coos Bay on August 5, 2015, as part of a tour leading up to the 2017 America’s Cup in Bermuda. According to promotional information on the tour’s website, “The mission is twofold: to spark new excitement in the current yachting community about the latest America’s Cup racing; and to engage the next generation of America’s Cup fans by highlighting the technologies that have elevated the sport to its present state.” The schooner is a replica of the 1851 yacht that stunned the world by winning the legendary sailing race around the Isle of Wight and won the trophy that now bears her name, the America’s Cup. Some in port events have been staged by the crew during the tour: Junior Sailors Tour & Talk, Dockside Tours, and even Sunset Sails. The ship will visit Newport on Saturday, August 1st. The 2015 West Coast Leg began July 3 in San Diego. The yacht is expected to moor at the City of Coos Bay’s docks near Downtown Coos Bay. The sailing ship is scheduled to complete the tour Sept. 2nd in Oceanside, CA
