On May 21, 2017, at approximately 4:15pm, the Oregon State Police responded to the Mapleton Valley Fire Department after hearing on the radio of a woman being transported by a friend to the Fire Department with serious injuries. Medical personnel and OSP performed CPR on the female before she was transported to Peace Harbor Hospital, where she died of her injuries. The preliminary investigation has determined that 26 year old, SARA M. SMITH, from Lane County, was riding an ATV by herself in the Deadwood area and for an unknown reason, crashed. The OSP is continuing the investigation to determine the cause and location of the crash.
