News release from the Newport FD. Newport Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire early Tuesday morning, May 19, on the 800 block of NE Douglas Street. The first arriving fire unit reported a single family home with fire venting out of two sides of the structure. After the initial knock down fire crews remained on scene several hours to perform extensive overhaul. One patient was treated at the scene and transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital. Newport Fire Department responded with 2 fire engines, a heavy rescue, several utility vehicles, and 14 personnel. Toledo, Seal Rock and Depoe Bay Fire Departments responded to the scene each with an engine and crew. Newport Police Department and Pacific West Ambulance assisted on scene. The Red Cross assisted some of the 5 persons displaced with emergency food and clothing allowances and shelter. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The occupants of the home were alerted to the fire when their working smoke detector was alarming.
