Excerpt from City of Coos Bay newsletter. Coos Bay resident Don Hynes has a vision of building outdoor exercise equipment near Empire Lakes in John Topits Park. Hynes’ goal is to provide people access to free exercise equipment at the park to help make for a healthier community. Hynes mission is to promote health through the use of outdoor gym equipment. Hynes worked diligently with the Coos Bay City Council, Parks Commission, and staff to find the appropriate location and style of equipment to install. Hynes applied for and received a generous grant from the Coquille Tribal Community Fund, raised donations from residents, and donated some of his own funds to purchase two pieces of exercise equipment. The City purchased the rubber matting and concrete surrounding the equipment. Hynes’ vision has come to fruition as City staff recently completed the installation process.
