The “Friday Foreign Film” series at Coos Bay Public Library continues at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13th. The hit comedy-drama from first-time director Mariana Chenillo, “Nora’s Will” (Mexico, 2008) is this month’s feature. Nora, a Mexican Jewish woman, divorced for twenty years after thirty years of marriage, times her suicide for Passover eve. Ever determined to be in control, she leaves a beautifully arranged table, a refrigerator full of food and detailed instructions for the seder that she was to host. Her cynical ex-husband José reluctantly makes arrangements for the funeral, which cannot take place for five days—but he is just as determined to foil Nora’s meticulously crafted plans and defy the agendas of their son and the rabbi. Complications grow as family and an odd group of characters gather at her apartment. When José discovers a mysterious hidden photograph, a long-held secret is revealed. This bittersweet comedy is the winner of seven 2010 Academy Awards in Mexico, including Best Picture of the Year. The “Friday Foreign Film” series, sponsored by the Friends of Coos Bay Public Library, is normally held on the second Friday of the month and is free to the public.
