Marshfield, South Umpqua and Brookings-Harbor jump out to the early lead in the Far West League’s girls’ basketball race.  All six-teams were in action Friday night.  Top-ranked Marshfield won at Siuslaw 67-27, South Umpqua beat visiting North Bend 42-34, and Brookings-Harbor won at home over Douglas 41-32.  The second round Tuesday night has the Bay Area Rivalry with Marshfield (1-0, 13-2) at North Bend (0-1, 4-10), Siuslaw (0-1, 3-12) has the long journey to Brookings (1-0, 7-8) , while South Umpqua (1-0, 7-7) and Douglas (1-0, 7-7) have their Douglas Co. rivalry first meeting at Winston.

North Bend, Marshfield and Brookings-Harbor each won opening round games in the 2018 Far West League boy’s basketball race Friday night.  The Bulldogs won at South Umpqua 74-73, Marshfield beat Siuslaw 53-31 in Florence, and Brookings-Harbor needed overtime at home to hold off Douglas 58-51.  The second round is Tuesday night with Marshfield (1-0, 9-6) at North Bend (1-0, 7-7), South Umpqua (0-1, 4-10) at Douglas (0-1, 5-9), and Siuslaw ((0-1, 8-7) at Brookings-Harbor (1-0, 7-8).
