Gabe Matthews has been named to the 2019 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team the American Baseball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday. Matthews, a junior from Salem, Ore., committed just one error in 498 chances during the season to earn a spot on the team. The Ducks’ veteran was a mainstay on the field for Oregon starting 55 of Oregon’s 56 games at first base. He set the Oregon record for consecutive starts with 137 before having the streak snapped vs. Gonzaga on May 14. While not starting vs. GU, he entered the game as a defensive replacement late in the game, which allows him to take a streak of 143 games played into his senior season. Offensively, Matthews batted .290 with a team-high six home runs, 34 RBI, 13 doubles and 30 runs scored. During his three-year career, he has hit .279 with 13 home runs, 87 RBI, 33 doubles, two triples and 74 runs scored. He heads into his senior season ranked in the top 10 at Oregon nine career categories: walks (4th), doubles (6th), games started (7th), hit by pitches (7th), hits (9th), RBI (9th), at bats (9th), multiple-RBI games (10th) and multiple-hit games (10th).  Matthews is the third Ducks player all-time to be named to the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team. He joins outfielder Austin Grebeck (2016) and third baseman Mitchell Tolman (2015).
