At 5:24 AM on Thursday, January 25, 2018, Newport Fire Department was dispatched to a house on fire at the 600 block of NW Nye Street. First in fire department units found the back half of the home totally involved in fire. The building was a vacant home and not occupied. Fire crews quickly determined deployed hose lines to protect adjacent structures. Due to the dilapidated state of the structure, and the level of risk to firefighters, no crews entered the home and it was allowed to burn down. The fire was contained to the building of origin and no exposures were damaged. Newport Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from Toledo Fire Department, and Depoe Bay Fire District. Newport Police Department, Newport Public Works, Office of the State Fire Marshal, Pacific West Ambulance and Central Lincoln PUD also helped on scene. Newport Fire Department responded with two fire engines, one rescue, two chief officers and 16 firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
