Shortly after 2:00 a.m., Tuesday morning, Jan. 27, the Coos Bay Fire Department was called to the report of a house fire at 1186 Washington Avenue. On arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke in this Englewood area home. A heavy build-up of creosote within the chimney had ignited, and the heat spread fire to the wooden structure around the chimney. Chimney or flue fires are common this time of year – particularly in longer chimneys that aren’t regularly maintained or when burning green wood with the air damper closed. The damage to the home owned by Wayne Thompson is estimated to exceed $30,000. If you need additional information about this incident, please contact Battalion Chief Dan Crutchfield or Fire Chief Mark Anderson at 541-269-1191.
