The City of Coos Bay will be observing Arbor Day Tuesday, April 28th. This is a special day set aside for the planting of trees. There will be a community tree planting event that is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. where volunteers are needed to help plant trees at two locations listed below: • Mingus Park (2 Trees next to pond/lake); • Eastside Recreational Boat Landing (8 Trees east of boat ramp). Participants should wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, gloves, and rain gear as needed. There is no experience required. Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Now it is observed throughout the nation and the world. Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, and wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and countless other wood products. Trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community. Coos Bay has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting endeavors.
