2014 6-8th Grade FWL District XC Championship Race Report
Sunshine and fair conditions smiled on the Southern Oregon coast yesterday as 170+ 6-8th grade harriers from ten Far West League schools did battle on the Tugman State Park 3k XC course. The Pirates would leave the day with many ribbons and one District Champion plaque. In the girls race 7th grade stand out Kaylee Delzotti (Millicoma) recorded a 38 second PR, 2nd place overall and first for 7th grade girls. Her times this year are reminiscent of recent Pirate graduate and State Champion Shaylen Crook, who now runs for the University of Utah. The 6th grade trio of Molly Picatti, Heather Grant, and Kensey Harlow had the race of their season. Picatti’s and Grant’s times were good enough for 9th and 10th overall in the 6th grade girl division. The girls’ team would finish 4th overall a one place improvement over last year. The boys saw a dominant performance from the top four with Jeremy Roe (MHS – 8th) taking the overall title in 10:57 notching a 26 second PR over last year. Gabe Delgado (MHS – 8th) ran a tactical masterpiece to finish in 11:36. A 41 second PR over his previous time. Delgado and teammates Aiden Leahy-Crooks (MHS – 8th) and Zach Holt (Millicoma – 6th) ran together the entire race to finish in an almost dead heat sprint with Gabe nipping Aiden at the line and Zach right behind. The trios 3rd, 4th, and 5th place overall finish was an impressive sight as the 6th place runner was not even in view. Aiden would claim an impressive 1:05 course PR. While Zach, in just his first season, should prove a dominant force in the FWL the next two years. His time was best among 6th grade boys by over a minute. Marshfield’s 5th man was Cameron Nye (MHS – 8th) finishing 16th overall in 12:23. In his first XC season Cameron has shown great improvement. Kyran Erwin (Millicoma – 7th) was 21st overall and the 6th place 7th grader. He came in 6th for the Bucs in a time of 12:36. This was a 3:09 improvement over his time last year. A PR margin he has been setting all season. Zach Randle and Mateo Garcia-Silver would earn 9th and 10th overall places for 7th grade boys. Brody Harnden (Millicoma – 6th) earned 6th place among 6th grade boys. The score of 28 for Marshfield secured back to back District Champion wins for the boys. Some Pirates celebrated with a jump in Eel Lake! While the District meet represents the end of the season for most of the team some will compete next weekend at the Middle School State Meet at Clackamas Community College. The Pirate Boys team is currently ranked 7th in the State out of 75 teams listed on Athletic.net.
