Marshfield won the 4A OSAA State Boys Track & Field Championship Saturday at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene.  It was a coastal sweep as the Pirates took first with 62-points, followed by Newport with 55 and North Bend 47.  Crook Co. earned the fourth place trophy with 40.33-points.  Another coastal team took the girl’s 4A title.  Astoria won with 57-points, followed by Molalla 48, Phoenix 48 and North Valley 47.  Marshfield was sixth with 38.50-points, and North Bend 27th with six-points.  Marshfield’s boys clinched the title with a win during the final event of the day, the 4X400 Relay.  The team of Trevor Johnson, Tristin Lemmons, Devin Benson, & Zach Kellar, turned the track Olympians have raced upon in 3:26.59.  Earlier, Kellar, the junior, took second in both the 400 (50.34) and 200 (22.48).  On Friday, senior Trevor Johnson got the Pirates off to a strong start with a first place finish in the Long Jump.  He needed a personal best of 22-07.25, on his final jump to clinch the title.  Johnson also grabbed fifth in the Triple Jump Saturday (42-2.50) and overall, participating in four events, scored 16.75-points for his team.  Junior Cody Jadin was eighth in the LJ (20-01.50).  Senior Ian Emlet placed fourth in the 800 (2:00.31). Marshfield’s 4X100Relay team of Johnson, Benson, Lemmons, & Matthew Hampton placed eighth (44.52).  Junior Phillip Hernandez took fifth in the Shot Put (48-07.75), sophomore Chase Howerton was third in the Pole Vault (14-00), and sophomore Tristin Lemmons placed fourth in the 300IH (40.58).   Junior Hannah Beaulieu led the Lady Pirates with a sixth place in the 100 (12.80), seventh in the 200 (26.57), seventh in the 300LH (48.98) and also ran a leg on the 8th place 4X400 Relay team (4:16.39) along with Jazmin Chavez, Kaylee Delzotti, & Tess Garrett.  Garrett, a sophomore placed fifth in the 800 (2:27.00).  Marshfield scored two places in the Pole Vault.  Sophomore Khaley Aguilar was second (11-00.25), while junior Jamie Anderson grabbed fourth (10-06).  Sophomore Elise Martin placed sixth in the Triple Jump (34-03.25), and seventh in the 100H (16.26).  Junior Jaycee Smith was fifth in the High Jump (5-00), and sophomore Rayvn Miranda took fourth in the Long Jump (16-07.25).  North Bend’s boys were led by sophomore Ty Hampton who uncorked a personal best, and meet record, in winning the Javelin (208-09).  He also placed eighth in the Discus (133-03).  Senior Michael Brown took the distance titles by winning the 3000 (8:49.04) on Friday and the 1500 (4:06.87) Saturday afternoon.  His running partner, fellow senior George LaGesse, placed third in the 1500 (4:08.75).  Senior Ben Dailey leaped to second in the Pole Vault (14-03.25) and senior Austin Barker was seventh in the 800 (2:03.36).  For the Bulldog girls, junior Kalista Ross was sixth in the Pole Vault (10-06) and freshman Chelsea Howard placed seventh in the Long Jump (16-03).

North Bend (18-7) will next play at Crook Co. in Prineville Wednesday, May 24th in the First Round of the OSAA State Softball playoffs.  Crook Co. (18-5) won the Tri-Valley Conference.   Far West League champion South Umpqua will host Elmira.

In another tune-up for the upcoming OSAA 4A State Baseball playoffs, Far West League champion North Bend won at Reedsport 3-2 on Friday.  The Bulldogs will now enter the First Round of the playoffs with a game at Hidden Valley, south of Grants Pass, Wednesday, 5 p.m., May 24th.  None of the Far West League teams in the “Play-In” round advanced.

Marshfield place four players on the Far West League All League teams following voting by the league’s coaches at the end of the regular season.  According to Coach Kevin Guthrie, selected were senior Chase Dibala 2nd Team Outfield; sophomore Grants Woolsey 2nd Team Pitcher; senior Braden Denton Honorable Mention Catcher; and, sophomore Cameron Olson Honorable Mention Outfield.

At the OSAA State Tennis Championships in Corvallis, North Bend’s Jacob Gage lost in the third place match to Kevin Yan of Delphian 6-2, 6-2.  The senior lost in the championship semi-finals to Vineet Edupaganit of Oregon Episcopal 6-2, 6-2.  Edupaganti went on to win the 4A/3A/2A/1A Singles Championship over Coleman Sherry 7-6 (7), 6-3.  In Doubles, the Bulldog team of Lyons & Parvin lost in the first round to Olander & Leef of Oregon Episcopal 6-1, 6-1.  Olander & Leef went on to win the State Douglas Championship.  Marshfield’s doubles team of Nicolaus & Nicolaus beat the Vale team of Wenger & Martin 6-3, 6-1 in the First Round, but lost 6-2, 6-2 to the Catlin Gabel team of Ward & Fenner, which went on to place third.  North Bend’s other team of Bennett & Morse, lost to the team from Cascade of Biddington & Hunt 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.  In the Consolation Quarterfinals, Lyons & Parvin lost to Martin & Cervantes of North Marion 8-2.  Bennett & Morse fell to Carlson & McLaughlin of Vale 8-1.
