Missing Person

Off Hwy. 38, CCSO release – On Sunday March 18, 2018 the Coos County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 10:01 am from a person. The caller was unable to complete the 911 call as the voice was garbled. The 911 Dispatcher, Andrew Otten of the Coos County Sheriff’s Office told the caller to try to Text to 911. At 10:07 am the caller texted to the Sheriff’s Office 911 center. As most users of cell technology know, even if you cannot get a voice call out on your phone, text messaging often will work. In this circumstance the text message worked and the caller was able to communicate with the 911 Dispatch Center for the Sheriff’s Office. The caller reported he had been on Highway 38 outside of Reedsport heading to California. The caller said his Global Positioning System (GPS) had him turn off of Highway 38 (probably on to Dean’s Mountain Road) to make his way home to California. However, as some may know, this road actually takes the driver into the heart of the 93,000 acre Elliott State Forest. Matthew J Flint, 28 years old of Corona California found himself in the southeast portion of the forest in the area of the 9000/1000 lines. Using our mapping software in the dispatch center, matching the GPS coordinates given by Mr. Flint’s phone, Dispatcher Otten was able to locate him and provide directions for the Timber Patrol deputy Doug Miller to find him. The deputy was able to locate the missing person by 11:04 am. The deputy led the missing person out of the forest and back to Highway 101. Please be careful when relying solely on your automobile GPS. Text to 911 is fairly new to the southern Oregon Coast. So far only one of the two 911 centers has it in Coos County but the Coos Bay 911 Center will be getting it. The type of phone you use also helps us if you call 911. Some prepaid phones and cards do not have subscriber nor GPS capabilities. Currently, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office can do Text to 911 but it cannot get photos yet but will soon be upgraded to this capability.

Jeromy’s girlfriend was transported to Bay Area Hospital for injuries sustained during the physical altercation. Jeromy was booked and lodged at the Coos County Jail.
