news release from the Newport PD.  On June 19, 2014, the Newport Police Department requested the public’s assistance in identifying a robbery suspect. Within an hour of the request, an anonymous citizen contacted the Newport Police Department and provided information that helped the Police positively identify the robbery suspect as Michael Donovin James Heslen, age 20 of no known address.  The Newport Police Department continued its investigation and learned that Heslen was also a suspect in a theft that occurred at the Newport Shell Station on June 19, 2014 at approximately 2:22 p.m. Heslen was reported to have stolen sunglasses from a display rack. An employee confronted Heslen outside the store about the stolen sunglasses. When confronted, Heslen ran from the area.  At about 4:00 p.m., Newport Police Officers located Heslen in Newport. He was taken into custody without incident.  Heslen was lodged in the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Theft 3rd Degree; Theft 2nd Degree; Robbery 1st Degree; Robbery 3rd Degree; Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree; and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. His bail was posted at $282,500.00

News release from the Newport PD.  On June 17th, 2014, at about 7:35 p.m., Newport Police Officers were dispatched to the Newport Steak and Seafood Restaurant, at 22 N Coast Highway, on a report of a theft. Investigation revealed that a male and female had entered the business, and ordered meals and drinks that totaled more than $75.00. When the couple was presented with their bill, they stated they were headed outside to smoke, and would return. Once outside, the couple fled, and Newport Police were notified. Newport Police Officers broadcast the suspects’ description to local agencies in hopes of locating and identifying them.  At about 10:35 p.m., a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy recognized the two suspects outside the Newport Shell gas station. The suspects, later identified as Gary Ivan Davidson, age 45 of Newport, and Maria Ida West, age 39 of Newport, were contacted by the Deputy. When Davidson was contacted, he exclaimed that he had a knife. Davidson then drew the concealed, large fixed-blade knife from his rear waistband. Davidson complied with the Deputy’s command, and dropped the knife.  Both Davidson and West were taken into custody for the earlier theft from the restaurant. During a search of West’s property, Officers located methamphetamine and drug use paraphernalia. Officers also discovered valid outstanding arrest warrants for Parole/Probation Violations for both Davidson and West.  Davidson was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Theft of Services, Carry Concealed Weapon-Knife, and Parole/Probation Violation-Warrant. His bail was set at $7,500.  West was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Theft of Services, Possession of a Controlled Substance–Methamphetamine, and Parole/Probation Violation–Warrant. Her bail was set at $50,000.
