Oregon’s 2014 collegiate football season got off to a rousing start with a 62-13 win over visiting South Dakota before 57,388 fans in Autzen Stadium on Saturday night. The No. 3 Ducks remain at home for the nation’s most anticipated nonconference matchup of the season, against No. 8 Michigan State on Saturday in Autzen Stadium (3:30 p.m. PT, FOX).

Senior quarterback Sean Mannion ran for one touchdown, passed for another and threw for 328 total yards on Saturday to lead Oregon State’s 29-14 victory over Portland State at Reser Stadium. An opening-day crowd of 40,309 saw the Beavers (1-0) parlay five second-half turnovers into 16 unanswered points to erase a 14-13 halftime deficit. OSU coach Mike Riley improved to 9-5 in season openers on the 10-year anniversary of the transformative east grandstand renovation. The Beavers head to Hawaii this week for a Sept. 6 game with the Warriors at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PDT; it will be televised by CBSSN.

The Oregon volleyball team won two matches, Saturday defeating Central Arkansas in straight sets, 25-19, 25-13, 25-16 and closing out a five setter against Illinois State 23-25, 25-10, 25-12, 22-25, 15-8. The Ducks went 3-0 for the weekend after defeating Ohio State on Friday and were crowned Oregon Invitational Champions. Oregon will have more tournament play in Hawaii next weekend when they play St. John’s (Sept. 4), No. 17 Hawaii (Sept. 5) and New Mexico (Sept. 6).

The Oregon State volleyball team (3-0, 0-0 Pac-12) dismantled the Idaho State Bengals (1-2, 0-0 Big Sky) Saturday afternoon with a 25-15, 25-9, 25-23 sweep. Finishing the weekend undefeated, the Beavers took home the Utah State Invitational Championship, winning nine of their 11 sets. Freshman Mary-Kate Marshall was named Tournament MVP while Tayla Woods and Darby Reeder were also named to the All-Tournament team. The Beavers return to action Friday, Sept. 5 when they travel to the Seattle University Tournament to play against University of Pacific, Lafayette College and the host Seattle U.
