At 9:16 PM on Thursday, February 22nd, 2018, Newport Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from a structure in the 4600 Block of South Coast Hwy. The first inbound fire unit could see smoke across the highway from about a mile away. Upon arrival it was confirmed there was a working structure fire in a commercial butcher/smokehouse and a nearby resident was evacuated. The business was closed and unoccupied at the time. Fire crews made access and extinguished the fire in the rear half of the building. The adjacent occupancy was opened and ventilated to remove smoke. Fire damage did not extend to any additional businesses. Newport Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from Pacific West Ambulance. Newport Fire Department responded with two fire engines, one water tender, one chief officer and 14 firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Newport Fire Department reminds you to never leave cooking or heating equipment operating unattended.
