News release from the Lincoln Co. Sheriff’s Office. On September 2, 2015 at about 3:40 PM, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported shots fired call near the 1000 Block of Highway 20 in Newport. Detectives from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) and officer’s from the Newport Police Department also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The investigation revealed that Newport resident, Matthew T. Reel, 27 year of age, fired several shots from a handgun into a wooded area. The shots were determined to have been fired in an unsafe direction and came close to persons located in the immediate area. Reel was taken into custody for Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Reckless Endangering and Menacing, then transported to the Lincoln County Jail where he was lodged on $80,000 bail.
