Hawkins Honored
Cheridan Hawkins has been named one of Oregon’s two Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners, the Pac-12 announced Tuesday. Daan Maasland, from men’s tennis, was the other Oregon winner. A conference medal is awarded annually to each member institution’s outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership. Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired in 2009 after serving for 26 years as commissioner of the Pac-10. Hawkins had one of the most storied careers ever at Oregon. The pitcher was both a three-time All-American and three-time academic All-American and was named the Pac-12 softball scholar-athlete of the year this season as a senior. She is the first in conference history to be named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year three times. The Anderson, Calif., native set program records for wins (108), strikeouts (1,081), shutouts (33) and no-hitters (8) during her four-year career with the Ducks. She also owns the program’s single-game (18) and single-season strikeout records (330).
