On Monday, March 5, 2018, at 6:09 pm, the Douglas County 9-1-1 center received a call from 62 year-old Robert Buck stating he was stranded in his boat on the north point of Bolon Island on the Umpqua River. Buck stated he was cold, wet and in need of assistance. Emergency services were dispatched to the man’s area, including deputies from the Sheriff’s Office. Gardiner Fire Department launched a small craft and was able to rescue Buck from his boat and bring him to dry land. He was cold, but otherwise unharmed. Buck launched his boat at approximately 3:00 pm, lost track of time and low tide eventually prevented him from getting back to shore.
