The FILM NOIR series at Coos Bay Public Library continues on Sunday, May 21st at 4:00.  A complex, involving puzzle-within-a-puzzle mystery story, Orson Welles 1948 “The Lady from Shanghai” is this month’s feature. With his Irish charm, Michael O’Hara (Orson Welles) spots the champagne blonde Rosalie (Rita Hayworth) riding in a carriage and chances his arm by offering her a smoke. Shortly after he comes to her rescue and before he knows it he is being offered a job on the yacht owned by her disabled husband Arthur Bannister (Everett Sloane) a renowned lawyer.   Against his better judgment, Michael O’Hara signs on as a crew member of Arthur Bannister’s yacht which is sailing to San Francisco. En route, they pick up Bannister’s law partner, a man named Grisby.  After they dock in Sausalito, Grisby proposes a strange plan – he wants Michael to help him fake his own murder so he can disappear without anyone trying to find him. Grisby offers Michael $5000 so he can run off with Rosalie. But when Grisby actually turns up murdered, Michael gets blamed for it. Somebody set him up, but it is not clear who or how… The Film Noir series is held on the third Sunday of the month.
