Concluding “that operating the facility was no longer competitive due to overall market conditions and unreliable – and often disabled – rail service,” Georgia-Pacific officials announced Thursday, April 11, 2019 that it is “permanently closing its facility” at Coos Bay.  The shutdown will impact 13 salaried positions and 98 wage earners.  The mill is located on Mullen Street in the Bunker Hill area.  Several years ago GP moved its headquarters out of Portland and relocated to Georgia.  The timber company still operates eight other plants in Oregon, a Container Board Plant at Toledo, Gypsum Mill at Canby, Chemical Plant at Albany, Tissue Mill at Halsey, Chemical Plant at Eugene, a Lumber Mill at Philomath, Wauna Tissue at Clatskanie, and the Northwest Service Center in Portland.  The company employs 1,870 in the State.  Georgia-Pacific plans to start cutting jobs in June and then phase the workers out until a complete closure.
