North Bend Police Chief Robert Kappelman and North Bend School District Superintendent Bill Yester issued a joint news release following the shooting at Umpqua Community College near Roseburg Tuesday morning. While offering their “their deepest condolences to those affected by today’s tragedy.” Back in November of 2014, NBPD & NBSD brought ALICE Active Shooter training to North Bend. ALICE (Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate) is a nationally recognized training and regular drills have occurred at each school in the district. An ALICE Drill was scheduled for Tuesday at the Middle School, but canceled out of fear of confusion with the situation at UCC. “The School District and the Police Department continue to work together to stay trained in advanced methods in responding to active shooter incidents, with the hope that we will never have to use those skills.”
