North Bend’s boys (229) and Siuslaw’s girls (199) won 4A Far West League District Track titles Saturday at Brookings-Harbor High School. Marshfield was second (133-boys, 175-girls) in both team races and North Bend’s girls (155) and Siuslaw’s boys (122) were third. Marshfield senior Madelyn Metzler set a new school record in the 100 prelims Friday clocking a 4A best 12.13. She finished first on Saturday in the finals in 12.60, but also won the 200 (25.91), anchored the 4X100 Relay team to first place (51.26), and ran a leg on the winning 4X400 Relay (4:15.31). Pirate junior Isabel Groth won the 100H (16.09), Long Jump (17-04.75) and was second in the 300H (47.65). Also for Marshfield Adryana Chavez won the Triple Jump (34-05), and McKenzie Allison the Javelin (131-01) while teammate Savannah Thurman was second (110-03). Thurman was also second in the Shot Put (34-01). Senior Brittany Cook was second in the 200 (27.31). North Bend junior Gabby Hobson won the 800 (2:27.65) and was second in the 3000 (11:12.70). Also for the Bulldogs, McKenzie Edwards won the 300H (47.65), McKenzie Gauntz the Pole Vault (11-00), and freshman Brittney Kubli won the High Jump (4-08). NB sophomore Samantha Shook was second in both the 800 (2:28.35) and 1500 (5:14.19). Alexa Reed was second in the 100 (13.40). On the boy’s side: North Bend sophomore Michael Brown swept the 1500 (4:08.19) and 3000 (8:58.22). Junior Drae Stark won the 110H (15.18), while teammate Cam Lucero was second (15.21). Stark also took the 200 (23.78), ran a leg on the winning 4X100 Relay team (44.23) and won the Triple Jump (41-07.50). Senior Drew Matthews was second in the Triple Jump (40-05), first in the Long Jump (20-02), and was second to Luke Lucero (11.5h) in the 100 (11.6h). Senior Nick Hossley was second in the 800 (2:03.08). Junior James Jordan won the High Jump (5-10), sophomore Brody Lucero was second in the Javelin (172-04), and sophomore Ben Dailey second in the Pole Vault (12-00). Marshfield was led by junior Hunter Drops who won the Pole Vault (14-00), second in the High Jump (5-10), won the Javelin (176-02), and ran a leg on the second place 4X100 Relay Team (45.94) with Trevor Johnson, Zach Kellar and Justin Holman. Freshman Zach Kellar was second in the 400 (52.73). Junior Sawyer Heckard was second in the 1500 (4:13.20). The top two in each event qualifies for the OSAA State Track & Field Championships are May 22-23 at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene.

Marshfield won the 2015 Far West League softball title Friday night with a 12-8 win at Douglas in Winston. The Trojans won the doubleheader opener 18-8 in six innings to set up the title game with two tied teams. It was an evening of home runs as both teams put shots over the short outfield. Khalani Hoyer led the Pirates off with a solo shot in the top of the first in the second game. Sara Allison followed with a two-run homer to stake Marshfield to a 3-0 lead. But in the bottom of the inning, Douglas got five runs, two of them on a home run by Taylor Holcomb. Douglas got another homer in the third, but Marshfield shut the home team down only allowing one run in the third, sixth and seventh, while tacking on runs of their own with three more in the second and two each in the fourth, fifth and seventh. In the first game, Carli Clarkson got her first career homer leading off the second. Paige Tavernier followed with a two-run shot in the same inning. With the win, Marshfield (14-1, 20-6) earns a bye from the “Play-In” round next Thursday, while Douglas (13-2, 19-4) will host Seaside in a “Play-In” game. South Umpqua (7-8, 13-10) finished third, and will be in the “Play-In” round at Cascade, Thursday, but the Lancers dropped two at Brookings-Harbor (6-9, 13-13) Friday, 4-3, 7-4. North Bend and Siuslaw split their doubleheader with the Vikings (1-14, 3-22) taking the first game 11-6, and the Bulldogs (4-11, 10-13) winning the second 11-5. Marshfield is ranked 7th in the final OSAA 4A Power Rankings. Second place Douglas is 6th, and third place South Umpqua 19th. Banks and defending state champion McLoughlin are ranked first and second entering the state playoffs.

North Bend won its second straight 4A Far West League baseball title with a doubleheader sweep, 9-1, 13-5, of Siuslaw at Florence Friday. The Bulldogs (14-1, 19-4) earn a bye from the “Play-In” round and will host an opponent in the First Round of the state playoffs. South Umpqua (12-3, 15-9) finished second in the FWL after beating Brookings-Harbor (3-12, 6-18) 4-3, 27-8, at home. The Lancers will host Estacada Thursday in Tri City in a “Play-In” game. Marshfield (8-7, 11-14) took third place with an 11-0, 8-5 sweep of visiting Douglas (3-12, 5-20) in Coos Bay. The Pirates earn a trip to the “Play-In” round and will be on the road Thursday to Sweet Home. In the final 4A OSAA Power Rankings, North Bend is 11th, South Umpqua 26th and Marshfield 27th entering the playoffs. Defending state champion Henley is ranked first and last year’s runners-up, Sisters, is second.
