Learn more about Oregon surfing at Coos Bay Public Library on Thursday, July 20th at 7:00 p.m. from Newport authors Scott and Sandy Blackman. The authors of two surfing books, OREGON SURFING CENTRAL COAST and OREGON SURFING NORTH COAST will be on hand to autograph books, share surfing stories and to present a 30-minute video about one of Oregon’s first surf clubs: The Agate Beach Surf Club that was organized in 1965.  Both books have been published by Arcadia Publishing and cover Oregon’s Surfing culture that began in Portland, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Pacific City, Agate Beach, South Beach and the surrounding surfing spots. The books feature personal recollections by Central and North Coast Surfers as well as their vintage photographs. While working on both of these books the Blackman’s reestablished relationships and networked with a few south coast pioneer surfers along the way as well. Notebooks and materials from south, central and north coast will be made available at this presentation that covers the pioneer days of Oregon’s surfing culture. Scott and Sandy Blackman have lived their entire lives along the Oregon coast. Scott, a pioneer surfer has been photographing the evolving surf culture for 50 years. Sandy, a retired educator is a successful writer and storyteller. Together, the Blackman’s have become the historians of Oregon’s pioneer surfing days along the central and north coasts.
