The Oregon State men’s soccer team opened the 2016 exhibition season on Friday with a 3-1 victory over the University of British Columbia at Paul Lorenz Field. Junior forward Jordan Jones assisted on a first-half goal and then notched the clincher at 87:30 for the Beavers. Junior forwards Timmy Mueller and Jaime Miralles also scored for OSU, which led 2-1 at halftime and then protected a 2-1 lead while playing a man down for much of the second half before Jones put the game to bed. Twenty-three players saw at least 18 minutes of action as OSU coach Steve Simmons substituted liberally on a 90-degree day to keep his side as fresh as possible. “In all my time at Oregon State this is probably the most comfortable I’ve felt playing a bench as deep as I did today,” said Simmons, starting his eighth season in Corvallis. “That’s a good starting point. The Beavers open the regular season against DePaul on Aug. 26 in the annual Hensor-Zaher Memorial Tournament. Their other tourney game is with Wright State at 3 p.m. Aug. 28.
