Cheserek Bowerman Finalist
Oregon junior distance runner Edward Cheserek was named a finalist for The Bowerman, track and field’s equivalent to The Heisman Trophy, Friday. Cheserek continued to impress in his junior campaign, winning a total of six NCAA Championships between cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. Cheserek piled on the NCAA Championships during the indoor and outdoor seasons, bringing his total to 15, the most of any runner in NCAA history. At the indoor championships, Cheserek pulled of the 3,000-5,000-DMR triple which had only been accomplished by former Duck Galen Rupp. Cheserek, however, had less recovery time, running the anchor leg of the DMR about 30 minutes after his win the 5,000. For the second year in a row, the St. Benedict Prep graduate won both the 5,000 and the 10,000 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The wins made him the first man since Rupp to sweep the indoor and outdoor distance events.
