Coquille Tribe release – NORTH BEND – The Coquille Indian Tribe is proud to co-sponsor, with The Mill Casino Hotel & RV Park, the First Annual Nasomah Singers Sobriety PowWow. The event is a family-friendly, drug and alcohol-free alternative for New Year’s Eve and it will be held at the Bandon Shed from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Dec. 31, 2023. Coquille Tribal Chair Brenda Meade says the Tribe is excited to be able to support this event as a community celebration. “PowWows are a great way for tribal communities to gather together and celebrate our heritage,” she said. This is a social, not competitive, PowWow. So, everyone is invited to attend and dance. Organizers say they would also like to particularly invite veterans, as they are always honored at the PowWows. Lyman Meade, one of the organizers of the event, said that while they are not dancing for prizes, like at the competitive PowWows, there will be raffle prizes. “Our idea with this event,” Lyman Meade explained, “is that this is an event that gives families another place to go for New Year’s Eve, without alcohol, that also has singing and dancing and they can all go as a family and enjoy themselves. And you don’t have to be a member of the Coquille Tribe, or any Tribe. Everybody can dance at this event.” The Nasomah Singers Sobriety PowWow will be Emceed by David Rudder. Head Dancers are Victor Fry and Jhanna Stutzman-Fry. There will also be a raffle and vendors will be on hand. The first Grand Entry is scheduled for 1:00 PM, with dinner at 5:00 PM, and the second Grand Entry at 6:30 PM. The Bandon Shed is located at 250 1st St. SW in Bandon, OR.
