The Coquille Tribal Community Fund has awarded $3,500 to the Coos Bay Area Zonta Foundation to purchase school supplies for low-income children in all six Coos County school districts. Supplies will be purchased and distributed during the 2014-2015 school year. Zonta’s Little Red Schoolhouse Program began in 1998 to respond to the overwhelming number of children in Coos County who arrived on the first day of school with no supplies. Over 4,400 children in Coos County qualified for assistance at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year in September. In 2001, the Coquille Tribal Council established the Coquille Tribal Community Fund in order to share profits from its business ventures, particularly The Mill Casino • Hotel, with the surrounding community. The Fund gives the Tribe a means to target its charitable efforts toward projects that will make a clear difference for daily life in the Bay Area and the southwest Oregon region. This year, the Fund awarded 39 grants valued at $342,000.
