I-5 Fatal, May 8

On May 5, 2017 at approximately 12:40am, the OSP responded to a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near the Santiam Rest Area in Marion County. The preliminary investigation revealed that 49 year old Edward Scott SCHMIDT, from Albany, was operating a 2011 Chevrolet pickup and was southbound on Interstate 5 when he drove into the back of a semi-truck that was parked in the “gore point” – the area between the interstate’s slow lane and the exit lane. SCHMIDT was pronounced deceased on scene and the operator of the semi-truck was not injured.
