I-5 Pedestrian Fatal near Salem, Nov. 14

On Sunday November 12, 2017 at approximately 5:04am, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a pedestrian fatality on Interstate 5 just north of milepost 256 (Market Street Exit) in Salem, Oregon. Preliminary investigation indicates that Salem Police Department was dispatched to a female, Sofia Diaz-Piceno (19) of Salem, Oregon, that was causing a disturbance at a restaurant just east of the Market Street Interchange. Salem Police Officers responded and initially could not locate Diaz-Piceno. Shortly after, Salem Police was advised of something or someone being struck in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5. Salem Police Department responded and determined that Diaz-Piceno was struck by at least two vehicles as she apparently attempted to cross the freeway from the east side to the west side of the freeway. Oregon State Police responded to investigate the incident. This is an ongoing investigation. No further information is being released at this time. Interstate 5 northbound was closed for approximately 3 ?1/2 hours during the initial investigation.
