More than 100 Reedsport and Elkton elementary school students will descend on a local forest on April 4, 2017 to participate in the 72nd annual Lower Umpqua Tree Plant. Fifth and sixth grade students will learn about forestry and land management while planting Douglas-fir seedlings. The Lower Umpqua Tree Plant is the longest continuously running tree-plant event in the United States, having first begun near Reedsport, Oregon in 1945. The tree plant will begin at 9 a.m. on private timber lands located in the Weatherly Creek drainage, approximately 22 miles east Reedsport off of Highway 38. Wednesday, April 5 is set aside as an alternate date for the tree plant in case of inclement weather. The Lower Umpqua Tree Plant is hosted by Roseburg Resources Company, Oregon Department of Forestry, Coos Forest Protective Association, Douglas County Forestry Department and the Bureau of Land Management. For additional information on the tree plant, please contact Tim Truax of Roseburg Resources at 541-271-0159, extension 55019.
