BLM release. More than 100 Reedsport and Elkton elementary school students will descend on privately-owned timberland on April 3, 2018 to participate in the 73rd annual Lower Umpqua Tree Plant. Fifth and sixth grade students will learn about forest management while planting Douglas-fir seedlings, thus connecting kids to public lands and America’s natural heritage. The Lower Umpqua Tree Plant is one of the longest, continuously running tree-plant event in the United States, having first begun near Reedsport, Oregon in 1945. The tree plant will begin at 9 a.m. on private timber lands located along Burchard Creek Road, just off Highway 38 east of Reedsport, Oregon. Roseburg Resources Company, Oregon Department of Forestry, Coos Forest Protective Association and the Bureau of Land Management host the Lower Umpqua Tree Plant.
