North Bend Main St. Program report, July 27

Excerpt from North Bend City Administrator David Milliron’s report to the City Council, July 25, 2023. Under Community Development, Stephanie Wilson reported on the City’s Main Street Program – Exciting Progress Update! We’re thrilled to share the latest developments on the building purchase for the former Bay Cleaners at 1858 Union Avenue in downtown North Bend! Today, the Acacia Trees were successfully removed from the rear of the building, marking a significant step forward in our revitalization efforts. Next on our agenda is to clear out the interior, preparing the space for its transformation. We’ll soon issue a request for proposals, seeking a skilled and licensed general contractor to renovate the property and bring new life to this cherished space. Our vision is to create a thriving hub that adds vibrancy to our community. With the generous support of the Urban Renewal Agency and the North Bend Main Street Program, we secured a remarkable $200,000 Oregon Main Revitalization Street Grant, allowing us to purchase the building and property. This competitive grant program enables us to drive community revitalization, encourage private investment, create jobs, and expand local businesses while enhancing our tax base. Before moving ahead, we prioritized safety and sustainability. North Bend Public Works collaborated with Arcadia Environmental to conduct thorough Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments, ensuring the property is free from any hazardous materials left over from its prior use as a dry cleaner. Our community’s well-being remains our top priority. The grant covered the total cost of acquiring the building. We’re ready to embark on the building’s renovation journey in partnership with URA funds. We’re delighted to announce that the owner of Angelina’s Mexican Restaurant has exciting plans to lease the property, intending to open a bustling tortilleria business. This endeavor is expected to employ ten skilled workers and provide fresh corn and flour tortillas to local restaurants and markets along the southern coast. A storefront for our cherished local retail customers is also on the horizon! The closest tortilleria to North Bend is currently in Springfield. However, our tortilleria will soon grace our downtown, supporting local businesses and satisfying taste buds. With additional off-street parking included, we’re confident this revitalized space will become a cornerstone of our community. As we progress on this exciting journey, we ask for your patience and understanding. Significant transformations require time, but we’re committed to delivering something truly exceptional for North Bend. Together, we’re shaping the future of our town! Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this incredible venture!
