Marshfield joined two other conference members in the OSAA 4A State Football quarter-finals after Round 1 wins in the playoffs Friday night. Top-ranked Henley advanced with a 48-7 win at home over Gladstone/Riverdale, while Mazama eliminated Pendleton/Nixyaawii 24-6 at Klamath Falls. The Pirates were the underdogs at La Salle Prep (8-3) but beat the Falcons 12-7 at Milwaukie for their third straight win. All critical single-elimination games. Marshfield (6-4) will now travel to Seaside (7-3) to play the Seagulls Friday, Nov. 10, 6 p.m. Mazama (7-3) will travel to No. 2 Marist Catholic (9-1), Eugene, also on Friday, Nov. 10, for a 7 p.m. game. In 3A – Siuslaw (5-5) fell at Dayton 34-14. In 2A – Bandon/Pacific (6-4) lost at Heppner 28-7. Gold Beach beat visiting Blanchet Catholic 16-0. The Panthers (8-2) will advance to the quarter-finals to play at Lowell (9-1), Nov. 10th, 7 p.m. Myrtle Pt. (7-1) is in the 1A8 quarter-finals and will host Adrian (7-3), Friday, Nov. 10th. Powers (8-0) is in the 1A6 quarter-finals will host Echo (6-3) on Saturday, Nov. 11th, 1 p.m.

Marshfield’s hopes of a second-straight 4A volleyball state championship were whisked away Saturday night at Springfield HS when fellow league member Marist Catholic (23-2) upended the top-ranked Lady Pirates (27-4) 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 17-15) in the title match at the OSAA 4A State Championships. The two teams had split their regular season matchups, each winning on their home court. This was the first match at a neutral site and it turned out to be for all the marbles. Marshfield beat The Dalles 3-0 Friday in their opener and followed with a 3-0 win over Cascade in the semi-finals. North Bend took fourth place at the tourney with a 3-1 win over Tillamook. The Bulldogs (19-7) had to get by The Dalles in a morning elimination match 3-2 before advancing to the consolation final against the Cheesemakers. North Bend lost its opener to Cascade 3-1 Friday. Marshfield senior Bridget Gould was named to the All-Tourney First Team along with classmate Paige MacDuff. Junior Ava Ainsworth was named to the Second Team. Also at Springfield, Sisters won the 3A championship 3-1 over Pleasant Hill. At Riverview in Redmond, Portland Christian beat Salem Academy 3-2 for the 2A title. And, Crane defeated St. Paul 3-1 for the 1A crown. 5A was won by Crescent Valley 3-1 over Bend at Forest Grove HS, and 6A went to Jesuit 3-2 over Oregon City.

Newport’s boys won the OSAA 4A State Cross Country Championship Saturday at Lane Community College, Eugene. The Cubs scored 49-points to Crook Co. with 87, The Dalles 136 and Molalla 146. Cottage Grove junior Carter Bengston won the 5K race in 15:49.6. Marshfield sophomore Jaxson Stoval was 37th overall (18:11.9). Philomath won the girl’s team race with 66-points, La Grande was runner-up with 71, Junction City third with 122 and The Dalles fourth with 141. North Bend’s girls were 8th (194). La Grande junior Cecilia Villagomez was the individual winner in 18:57.1. Sophomore Ellie Massey led North Bend in 25th (21:10.7). In the 3A/2A/1A girl’s race, Siuslaw was second and Bandon fifth. Sophomore Marley Petrey was eighth overall (20:15.6) for the Tigers, and sophomore Alison Huges led Siuslaw in 15th (20:33.7). In 3A boys, Siuslaw was fourth. Senior Brayden Linton led the Vikings in eighth (16:54.1). Bandon was seventh in the 2A/1A race, while Reedsport was tenth. Freshman Noah Brown was 17th overall for the Tigers (18:08). Myrte Pt. freshman Eli Nicholson took 37th (18:55.1), and junior Clayton Wilson led Reedsport in 43rd (19:19.3).
