Marshfield Athletic Director Greg Mulkey has retired from his position at the Coos Bay secondary school. Casey McCord will replace him this Fall. Mulkey will move into the main school building to become Dean of Students, replacing McCord. Mulkey, as some of his fellow AD’s have stated, “set the bar high” in Oregon prep sports. As a prep athlete at Coquille, he played football, basketball and golf for the Red Devils. He went to Oregon State to play football for the Beavers. Following graduation, he got his first teaching and coaching job at Newport. He returned to Coos County as a teacher at Milner Crest in Coos Bay. He later became the school’s principal before moving to the high school where he became the athletic director, later principal and back to AD. He was also a finalist for the Coos Bay School District 9 superintendent’s position, but as an AD is where he accelerated. All of the Pirate athletic programs have advanced to state championship tournaments under Mulkey’s watch, including ten team state champions and five runners-up spread over five programs not counting the success of Cheer, Dance and Speech Debate. All have banners in the Pirate Palace. There have also been numerous individual champions in Cross Country, Tennis, Wrestling and Track & Field. Mulkey also served on the OSAA Executive Board and was a strong organizer behind getting the 3A Basketball Tournament to the Bay Area as well as starting the South Coast All-Star Basketball games and helping to move Pirate Sports broadcasts to the on campus radio station KMHS. Heritage Hall, honoring the history, students & athletes at MHS, was another one of his projects. As one fellow AD stated, “big shoes to fill.” Indeed.
