Defending 4A state champion Philomath handed Marshfield its first loss of the 2014-15 boys’ basketball season with a 38-32 win at the Pirate Palace in Coos Bay Saturday night. The Warriors (2-0) held the Pirates to two-points in the second period. On Friday night, Marshfield opened the season with a 46-40 win over visiting Newport. The Pirates (1-1) play at Cottage Grove on Tuesday night. Marshfield’s girls won their opener at home Friday night over Newport, 54-35, but the Lady Pirates lost to Philomath Saturday night 28-14. Marshfield (1-1) plays at Cottage Grove Tuesday night.

Marshfield’s wrestling team opened the 2014-15 season by taking second place at the Del Norte High School Border Clash in Crescent City, CA Saturday. Crater, out of Central Point, won the 30-team meet. Individually for the Pirates: 106 Ryder McKee 2nd; 113 Cole smith 1st; 120 Aj Lira 1st; 126 Tyler Campbell 1st; 132 Cade Hite 2nd; 152 Travis Wittlake, Jr 1st. Travis Wittlake, Jr was named outstanding wrestler.
