Pedestrian Dies from Accident Injuries, Jan. 30

News release from the Newport PD. On January 23, 2015, at approximately 10:25 a.m., Newport Police Officers investigated a traffic crash at 1010 SW Coast Highway involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. Newport Police Officers began their investigation and determined Edward Louis Roesing, age 76 of Waldport, had been parked in his vehicle, a 2004 Chrysler Sebring, in the parking lot near the front of the building. When Roesing placed his vehicle in gear, it raced across the parking lot in reverse, ricocheted off one of the two fixed columns in front of the building, and crashed through the glass entry way of the building. It was determined the victim, John Giles, age 83 of Waldport, had just walked up to the glass entry way when he was struck by Roesing’s vehicle. Roesing’s vehicle continued in reverse, and crashed through both the outer and inner glass entry way doors to the business, sending Giles through the inner glass entry way. Giles was initially transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, and later to Corvallis with serious injuries. At the time of the initial report, the extent of Giles’ injuries were unknown. Roesing was uninjured; he remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. At the time of the investigation, Roesing was cited and released for Reckless Driving and Assault 3. On January 28, 2015, Giles died from injuries he sustained related to the crash. The crash is still under investigation. Investigation results will be forwarded to the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office.
