News release from SCINT. Coquille, OR March 17th, 2015 John Thomas Bracken was sentenced to twenty-one months in custody after pleading guilty to Unlawful Delivery of Methamphetamine and Failure to Appear in the First Degree. On March 30, 2014 North Bend Police Reserve Officer stopped a truck operated by John Bracken for running a red light near Oak Street and Newmark in North Bend, Oregon. North Bend Police Officer Chris Rule arrived on scene as he believed Bracken to be potentially violent. During the stop it was learned Bracken had an outstanding warrant. During an inventory of Bracken’s pockets approximately $1,142.00 was located. During the stop, Bracken requested the vehicle be secured as the truck belonged to Michael Kendal Frye. While securing the vehicle Officer Rule saw what he suspected were weapons hastily hidden. Bracken admitted some of the knives were double edge; which, given Bracken’s previous felony convictions, are illegal. Officer Rule and Reserve Officer Stark commenced a search of the truck locating, drug tally sheets, several knives and prohibited weapons such as a slung shot and double-edged daggers. Officers also located a black leather jacket that contained a portable digital scale, marijuana, and methamphetamine that weighed over 14 grams. Bracken denied ownership of the leather jacket. However, Oregon State Trooper Looney recalled seeing the defendant wearing a black leather jacket on numerous occasions and had video footage from a previous car stop in which the defendant was wearing a black leather coat with the exact same color, cut and style of the coat located by the North Bend Officers. The defendant was charged by a Coos County Grand Jury of Unlawful Delivery of Methamphetamine, Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine, and Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon. The defendant subsequently failed to appear for a January 2015 jury trial, a warrant was issued, and indicted on Failure to Appear in the First Degree. The defendant was apprehended by Deputy Steven of the Coos County Sherriff’s office on January 30, 2015. Bracken pleaded guilty to Unlawful Delivery of Methamphetamine and Failure to Appear in the First Degree. Pursuant to Oregon Sentencing Guidelines, Bracken was sentenced to a total of twenty-one months in custody followed by thirty-six months post-prison supervision.
