Coos Bay School Board, April 14

The Coos Bay School District’s Board of Education moved their normal meeting location Monday night inside the Milner Crest Education Center to the old elementary school’s gymnasium in anticipation of a large turnout. They were right. Many community members came out to air concerns about the leadership of the district and in particular two recent events that involved Superintendent Dawn Granger placing MHS Athletic Director and Dean of Students Greg Mulkey on “Leave,” and the decision by MHS principal Doug Holland to not renew his contract because of Granger. The Board was given more than 50 formal complaints. All concerned the leadership and direction of the district. Community members were not the only group speaking out, there were also concerns and complaints voiced by students, coaches, teachers, and principals. The School Board took no action, but will reportedly investigate the formal complaints.
