Coos County Jobs, July 3

According to the monthly newsletter from the Oregon Employment Dept., South Coast Labor Trends, Coos County payroll employment rose by 240 jobs in May, mostly as a result of 120 jobs added in local government education and 60 jobs in leisure and hospitality. Gains were also estimated in manufacturing, with 10 jobs added in both wood products and food manufacturing. Professional and business services employment climbed by 50 over the month.  Construction, and mining and logging both added 20 jobs in May, following normal seasonal trends in these mostly outdoor industries. Government employment rose by 120 jobs over the month, mostly due to local education job gains. Over the year, Coos County lost 140 payroll jobs. Job gains were estimated in construction (+50), retail trade (+50), manufacturing (+20), and leisure and hospitality (+40). But not all industries are showing signs of strength. Those with over the-year job declines included mining and logging (-20), professional and business services (-210), and private educational and health services (-40). Transportation, warehousing, and utilities was another lagging Coos County industry, shedding 50 jobs during the past year. Government employment rose by 40 over the year. Local government added 70 jobs, 40 of those in local education, while Indian tribal employment slipped by 30 jobs. The over-the-year loss in tribal employment should be reversed when job totals are tallied from the new Three Rivers Coos Bay casino and show up in the coming months.
