Bay Area Hospital has awarded its first Health Career Scholarships to three participants in the hospital’s Student Volunteer Program: Crew Berggren, a Marshfield High School graduate, was awarded $1,500. Crew plans to attend Southwestern Oregon Community College and already has completed many of the prerequisites to apply to the nursing program. He has volunteered in the hospital’s Medical Care Unit and most recently in Surgical Services, where he found his passion and would like to work in the future. Destiny Millan, a North Bend High School graduate, was awarded $1,000. Destiny has volunteered at the Emergency Department Information Desk and the Family Birth Center. Her experience at BAH helped her decide to pursue a career as a nurse. She most enjoyed her time shadowing in the Emergency Department. She plans to attend SWOCC. Sarah Wall, another North Bend graduate, was awarded $500. Sarah plans to attend Brigham Young University-Idaho. She hopes to pursue a bachelor’s degree in health sciences followed by a doctorate in physical therapy. She volunteered at the hospital’s information desks but most enjoyed her experience in Rehabilitation Services, which solidified her goal of a physical therapy career. The scholarship program was created this year to promote healthcare careers among local students. To be eligible, a student must participate in the Student Volunteer Program, indicate plans to study a health-related field in college, and demonstrate BAH’s institutional values of kindness, excellence, teamwork, ownership and innovation. The Student Volunteer Program exposes local students to healthcare careers within the hospital setting. They handle assignments such as guiding visitors, taking water to patients, stocking supplies, and assisting nurses. Since the program’s launch three years ago, 72 local students have taken part.
