News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. “On 1-4-14 around 1500 hours Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted by Hauser Fire responded to the report of an injury ATV accident on the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in the area commonly known as Razor Back Hill. Investigation at the scene indicated that both operators were operating their respective ATV’s within their design limits, but the visibility was restricted due to the hilly terrain. Billy D. Swearingen was operating a Polaris 900 Side by Side RZR headed in a northern direction, and Dean A. Darlington was operating his Honda 250R motorcycle in a southern direction. Both operators were headed down the same trail at the opposite direction at speeds, which did not allow them to stop, or maneuver before impacting each other. Both operators were wearing and using current safety equipment, but due to front collision between a side by side and a motorcycle, Dean Darlington who was operating the Honda motorcycle, suffered injuries to his face, arms and chest. Mr. Swearingen was not injured in the crash. The Honda motorcycle and side by side both had to be removed from the sand. Mr. Darlington was later flown to Portland due to the extent of his injuries, but is expected to make a full recovery.
