Roberto Nelson scored a game-high 26 points, but Oregon State could not overcome a strong second-half effort by California, falling 88-83 on Saturday night at Gill Coliseum. Nelson was a spark plug for the Beavers offensively, going 4-of-8 from downtown and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw stripe. The Santa Barbara, Calif. native also dished out a career-high nine assists on the night. Angus Brandt was also efficient, tallying 22 points on a 7-of-10 shooting performance. The Australian also added four rebounds to his final stat line. Eric Moreland posted a double-double for the second consecutive game, adding 14 points and 11 rebounds for Oregon State (9-7, 1-3 Pac-12).

Ruth Hamblin posted her second career double-double with game-highs of 27 points and 16 rebounds, freshman point guard Sydney Wiese added career-highs of 24 points and nine assists and the Oregon State women’s basketball team shot over 56 percent in the second half to win its sixth consecutive Civil War over rival Oregon on Saturday night in Eugene, 88-80. In a back-and-forth game that featured seven ties and 15 lead changes, Deven Hunter put the Beavers (9-6, 1-2) up for good when she connected on mid-range jumper with 8:52 left. That bucket sparked a 13-3 Oregon State run that was capped with a Jamie Weisner layup in traffic. A 3-pointer from Ali Gibson with 1:43 to go gave the Beavers their largest lead of the night, 85-74. Oregon (9-5, 0-3) would cut it to seven on a Danielle Love layup with 57 seconds left, but Wiese would make three of four free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. The two teams meet tonight in Corvallis for a rematch at 7 p.m.

If the last eight days have been a slog for the Oregon men’s basketball team, the next six could feel like an eternity. On the heels of another defense-optional loss Sunday, 82-80 to Stanford at Matthew Knight Arena, the Ducks will go almost a week before playing in Corvallis next Sunday. Oregon’s 13-0 start is a distant memory after three straight losses, and the team’s No. 17 ranking will be by the time they face the Beavers. Between now and then, the Ducks figure to face as intense a midseason practice week as one could imagine.
