Mass Shooting at UCC, Oct. 2

The Douglas Co. Sheriff’s Office reports ten were killed and seven injured during a mass shooting Tuesday morning, Oct. 1st, by a lone gunman at Umpqua Community College north of Roseburg in the small community of Winchester. The gunman, identified by some media agencies as 26-year old Chris Harper-Mercer, who lived in Winchester, was reported “Code 4, suspect is down,” about 10:45 a.m. in a reported exchange of gunfire with the first-two responding police officers in Snyder Hall. The first calls to 9-1-1 were made at 10:38 a.m., according to Douglas Co. Sheriff John Hanlin. The callers reported someone was shooting outside of the doors in Snyder Hall, and that one female was down. Numerous law enforcement officers from the surrounding communities responded, including troopers with the Oregon State Police, and agents with the FBI and U.S. Marshal’s Service. The 2015-16 school year had just begun at UCC with a student body estimated at about 4,500, but not that many were on campus as most are reportedly part-time students. This is the second school shooting in Douglas Co. Back in 2006, a shooting occurred at Roseburg High School.
