A 20-year old Idaho male is in custody at the Curry Co. Jail in Gold Beach following a high-speed chase in a stolen car Thanksgiving Day from Brookings to Gold Beach. Daniel William Talavera, Nampa, ID, has been charged with Attempt to Elude Police Officers, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangerment, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Theft in the First Degree. A female passenger turned out to be a hitchhiker Talavera near Arcata, CA, and was released. The vehicle was taken from a dealership in Elko, Nevada. The pursuit began about 4:30 p.m., when a Brookings police officer attempted to stop Hyundai Elantra for speeding. The driver took off north on Hwy. 101. The Curry Co. Sheriff’s office joined the pursuit along with Gold Beach Police and the Oregon State Police. The driver and passenger bailed out of the stolen vehicle near Edson Creek Road. A K-9 unit was deployed. After dark, the two suspects were located and taken into custody in a brushy area.
