Marshfield’s boys and girls opened the 2015-16 prep basketball season with road wins at Newport, Friday. The girls won the first game of the coed doubleheader 52-45. Freshman guard Tess Garrett led the Lady Pirates with 18, she scored ten of the team’s 14 third period points helping Marshfield extend a three-point half-time edge to 39-34 entering the fourth. The Lady Pirates outscored the Cubs 13-11 to secure the win. Senior Carli Clarkson had 12, Alex Locati 7, Marissa Erickson 5, Kelsey Jackson 3, Grace Brugnoli 3, Ellise McMillan 2, Aspen Standlee 1. Marshfield’s JV won 41-26. In the boy’s varsity match, the Pirates outscored Newport in the first period and fourth to pull out a 61-56 win. The Cubs tied the score in third, and Marshfield only had a two-point leading entering the final frame. Senior Rylee Trendell had a game high 22-points, Scott Clough 9, Bo James Weatherston 7, Malio Favalora 7, Jake Miles 5, Kasey Banks 4, Nick Minton 2. Marshfield won the JV game 58-47. The Pirates host Cottage Grove Tuesday, Valley Catholic Friday and then play at Philomath Saturday.

North Bend’s girls won their 2015/16 season opener Saturday night at home over visiting Junction City 57-38. Sophomore Cheyene Datan scored 13, while classmate Brittney Kubli had eight, plus 14 rebounds, Drew Culver put in eleven-points, and Haley Edwards scored ten. The Bulldogs (1-0) are at Newport Thursday, Dec. 10. North Bend’s boys dropped their opener at home to JC 57-51 in the late game of the coed doubleheader. Garrett Curtis and Brody Lucero both scored nine, while Ryan Wirth and Tyler Brown each had eight. Like the girls, the boys (0-1) are on the road Thursday to Newport.
