News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. On 12/13/2015 at about 4:40 PM two uniformed Sheriff’s Deputies were responding to a call in marked patrol vehicles traveling on Highway 42 near Del Mar Lane, near the Community of Green Acres. When both patrol vehicles were traveling through the area a black Ford Fusion pulled out of Del Mar Lane and entered onto Highway 42 in front of both deputies and a loaded semi-truck causing all three vehicles to make evasive movements to avoid a crash. The driver of the car then fled on Highway 42 and turned onto Chehalis Road. Deputies found the driver in the car when he was returning down the hill after running into a dead end. Investigation indicated the driver, 31 year old Andrew W Smith, fled up Chehalis Road after the near miss on Highway 42. When Smith got to the dead end of Chehalis Road he told his twelve year old daughter who was a passenger in the vehicle with him to get out of the car and to walk home. After being taken into custody one of the Deputies found the twelve year old girl walking out of the woods. She was later driven by the Deputy back to her custodial home in Coos Bay. Andrew Smith was arrested and transported to the Coos County Jail and charged with Driving Under the Influence (Alcohol and Marijuana), Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangerment. Additionally he was cited for Driving While Suspended and for Failure to Provide a Breath Sample.
