Newport USCG Day Facility open through 2018, Feb. 5

When the U.S. Coast Guard attempted to shutdown the Newport Day Air Facility on the Central Oregon Coast last year, the announcement was met with an uproar from not only commercial and recreational fishermen who risk their lives on the Pacific Ocean, but city, county, state, federal officials and politicians who represent the area. The daytime facility at the Newport Municipal Airport got a reprieve. Language in a current authorization bill for the U.S. Coast Guard; however, includes language that the Newport facility and a rescue station in South Carolina will remain open through at least 2018. The USCG wanted to close the two facilities in a budget saving move.
