Attempted Assault/Strangulation, Feb. 29

News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. Narrative: On February 26, 2016, at about 0323 hours, Deputies were dispatched to 92068 Cape Arago Highway in Coos Bay for a reported domestic dispute. When deputies first arrived, they were unable to make contact with anyone at the residence. After a few moments, deputies were able to wake the female involved. The female stepped outside to speak with deputies. Deputies opened the door of the residence again to check to see if anyone else was inside. Deputies saw a male running towards the front door with a large kitchen knife in one hand and a pocket knife in the other hand. The male exited the residence and began advancing on deputies. The male was yelling, ā€œIā€™m going to kill you! Shoot Me ! Shoot Me!ā€ A deputy was able to deploy a taser on the male and deputies were able to get him into custody. The male was identified as Michael Leonard, 31 years old of Coos Bay. Once Leonard was in custody, deputies were able to speak with the female at the location. The female told deputies Leonard had punched her multiple times in the head and strangled her to the point she could no longer breathe. Leonard was transported to the Coos County Jail, where he was booked and lodged on the above charges.
